The product of glycolysis is pyruvate. Glycolysis is the first step in cellular respiration and takes place in the cytoplasm of cells. It involves the breakdown of glucose into two molecules of pyruvate, along with the production of two molecules of ATP and two molecules of NADH.
Pyruvate can then either be converted into lactic acid under anaerobic conditions, or enter the citric acid cycle (also known as the Krebs cycle) to continue the process of cellular respiration in the presence of oxygen. This further breakdown of pyruvate produces more ATP and NADH, which are used by the cell to generate energy.
